This development tool, published in 2006, aimed to convince school leaders that working closely with the community was a good idea. Since then the need for community engagement to build cohesion has become widely accepted by school leaders at all levels. Indeed, working with the community has been part of the Ofsted accountability framework since September 2009. However, some schools, networks and clusters starting community leadership activities will still find the toolkit useful in developing a shared understanding about why it is important to commit time, energy and resources to this work.
