As schools are given more freedom to follow their own path, they also face greater external examination and are required to be more accountable. This summary explores how schools, and in particular the newly emerging all-through academies, can balance these conflicting demands.

Stemming from an in-depth study and interviews with senior leaders from three successful all-through academies, it provides guidance on how thorough self-evaluation can lead to greater consistency and improvement.

It examines the problems that can affect all-through academies, before detailing a number of strategies used to improve outcomes and accelerate progress.

Emphasising the importance of a core cycle of monitoring, evaluation, planning and action, this summary provides a model of good practice inspired by the challenging circumstances of an all-through academy, but which can be adopted in any setting.
