Research associate Robin Wakinshaw looks how clusters of schools can work more effectively to achieve the community involvement targets in their development plans. It provides an overview of how community learning partnerships in Somerset have engaged with their communities and identifies lessons for local clusters of schools working to achieve community involvement.
The investigation found that the main issues that would need to be addressed to improve the community involvement included:
- involving the wider community
- encouraging schools to work together
- staff development
- developing leadership by working collaboratively
Wakinshaw concludes that headteachers should be aware that school improvement andcommunity development are interdependent and that they share responsibility for leadership of the wider educational system.
