Community conversation: developing extended schools through stakeholder consultation

Becoming an extended school can be a daunting prospect when considering the number and range of groups involved. This practitioner research explores the experiences of schools that have already taken the leap, and presents the lessons learned with a particular focus on consultation with the community.

The report explores the notion of a 'community conversation' as a way of consulting openly with stakeholders to develop and agree the way forward. It follows one school's approach to setting up their community conversation, and pinpoints what they consider to be key factors in making the consultation successful, some of which include:

  • keeping the event action-focused, with tasks for a wide range of individuals
  • placing an emphasis on quick wins to gain momentum
  • using a neutral facilitator
