Incidents happen every day in every school. But what tips the scale to make something critical? This summary reflects an investigation into how leaders and teachers in school deal with these incidents. Learning from their responses could be the key to keeping 'critical' out of your vocabulary.

It begins by looking at the way we define a critical incident, and how this varies depending on the context, including an individual's background, experiences and opinions. It outlines Critical Incident Technique, a way to change how we look at the problems we face and gain new perspective.

Most importantly, it presents coping strategies to manage the issues faced in school. Some are well-known incident management techniques, while others are drawn from this investigation, reflecting good practice carried out at five primary schools which were part of the study.
