Schools in difficulties can be terrible places to work, but they can also present enormous opportunities. This report examines how the skills of middle leaders can be harnessed to drive schools forward, benefitting both the school and the individual.

Studying five secondary schools judged by Ofsted to be in difficulties, it shows how the middle leaders went through similar stages of growth.

It looks at the early stage of change, where frequently middle leaders had not realised the full extent of their role, reflecting on the way this changed, and how they were helped to see their importance within the school structure.

It studies the development of these leaders, and how strong headteachers moved quickly to implement training and support in order to empower them. Finally, it looks at how middle managers grew into leaders and began to lead school improvement themselves.

The report outlines practical strategies used by headteachers to help middle leaders in their development and increase capacity at their school. A real inspiration to help make the most of middle leaders.
