In light of a potential leadership crisis, with falling numbers of applicants for leadership posts and with a retirement 'bulge' amongst existing heads and middle leaders this report discusses possible directions to move thinking and practice forward. Key findings include the characteristics perceived by heads, middle leaders and classroom teachers to be important in identifying leadership talent and the possible role that heads might play in the notion of 'growing leaders'.
