This practical guide helps school leaders to plan and implement a strategy for developing and retaining leadership talent. It features practical activities and discussion topics to help leadership teams to review their current practice and plan new approaches.
This guide argues that the task of developing others and 'growing' tomorrow's leaders is not just desirable as a philosophical requirement, but a key responsibility to be shared across the system. It is recognised that this will involve headteachers and senior leaders of individual institutions and their governors. But it is also the responsibility of national and regional bodies such as the Department for Education, NCSL and local authorities to take a lead in this.
The guide also includes an overview of national systems for developing leadership talent. However, please note that the policy context referred to in the guide may have changed.
