This research report investigates the structure and practice of primary headteacher induction.
Given the aim of continually improving school leadership, this research study seeks to:
- Identify strategic elements of headship.
- Explore the extent to which headteachers are consciously aware of their strategic thinking.
- Consider barriers and opportunities to effecting strategic change.
- Reflect on time scales around the induction process.
- Describe the specific issues facing headteachers in particular contexts.
- Propose options for further support and challenge during the induction process.
It concludes that a well designed framework, which incorporates and appreciates the various contextual issues of primary schools, can be a great benefit. Such a benefit will be felt by both the headteacher and the school, as they work together to improve strategic opportunities and outcomes.
