Just as some children have huge potential from an early age, some teachers have a great capacity for leadership from very early in their career. This guide is part of a project to encourage potential headteachers of the future to take part in placements or internships to experience leadership and increase their desire to follow this path.
The project aims to reduce the length of time from apprenticeship to headship by encouraging staff to consider leadership at an early stage and aims to expand the participants' knowledge, understanding of and aspirations to leadership.
As part of this scheme, this booklet is accompanied by a set of practical resources which as a whole are designed to support local authorities and groups of schools setting up internships as part of local succession planning.
The booklet is divided into seven stages to help devise this type of programme. It explains the important planning steps such as finding funding, how to select participants, and arranging training for mentors, all the way through to evaluating and celebrating the process.
Each stage is accompanied by guidance, advice and accompanying proformas to give you everything you need to find tomorrow's leaders.
