EAP programme details

Equal Access to Promotion (EAP) offers self-directed personal leadership reflection activity that is facilitated and supported by experienced black and minority ethnic (BME) headteachers. As well as school-based activity, the programme includes a two-night, two-day residential forum at the National College's Learning and Conference Centre in Nottingham.

Phase Details
Phase one

At the end of Phase one, participants will have:

  • carried out a self-directed school-based leadership development/reflection activity. The activity will be based around something already on the participant’s leadership agenda (maximum one-day equivalent)
  • engaged in the online network
  • prepared a short presentation based on learning from chosen Phase one activity
  • submitted an outline of their presentation to the provider(s)
Phase two

Phase two is a two-day, two-night residential event at the National College in Nottingham.

At the end of the residential phase participants will have:

  • explored ‘where am I now on the leadership journey’/personal leadership journey
  • experienced a 30-minute one-to-one mentoring session with a facilitator/school leader mentor
  • presented outcomes of Phase one, and given and received peer feedback (in order to develop presentation skills, feedback skills and share learning/knowledge)
  • expanded their knowledge of current national leadership issues/trends and further leadership development opportunities
  • explored and acknowledged real and perceived barriers for BME school leaders and begun to develop personal strategies to overcome these
  • increased their understanding of and practised skills to support creating and negotiating partnership/networks/teams
  • prepared for their Phase three leadership change activity, utilising learning from Phase one and Phase two
Phase three

At the end of Phase three participants will have:

  • implemented their leadership change activity planned in Phase two
  • completed a Leadership Change report in which they reflect on their learning, and outcomes for themselves and their school. A selection of reports will be published online by NUT.
  • engaged in an ongoing online network with their peers
  • engaged in local authority leadership networks
  • completed a programme evaluation questionnaire
  • considered next steps for their leadership development, creating a personal action plan
Phase four (optional)

By the end of Phase four, participants will have taken part in the Phase four one-day event and:

  • shared their leadership stories, including progress since Phase three, contributing to the gathering of impact evidence
  • engaged in cross-group/cohort networking, building new relationships and sustaining existing ones
  • heard from inspirational speakers
  • reflected on their personal growth as leaders and the next stage in their leadership career
