Great leadership development

Giving all leaders the expertise they need to become great leaders
National College leadership development programmes serve leaders of schools, children’s centres and children’s services throughout their careers. Below are our latest findings:
- Since the College opened in 2000, over 150,000 places have been taken up on our programmes.
- Those engaged with the College achieve faster rates of improvement in exam results:
- Key Stage 4 results of schools engaged with the College increased by 10.6 per cent between 2006 and 2010, compared to a 9.2 per cent improvement of those not engaged.
- Key Stage 2 results of schools that have engaged with at least one of the College’s development programmes increased by 3.8 per cent between 2006-2010, compared with 3.5 per cent in schools that had not engaged.
- 43 per cent of schools led by an National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) graduate showed an improvement in their Ofsted Leadership and Management rating between 2006 and 2010, compared with only 32 per cent of non-NPQH led schools.
- 45 per cent of schools led by an NPQH graduate showed an improvement in their overall Ofsted rating between 2006 and 2010, compared with only 32 per cent of non-NPQH led schools.
- 33 per cent of schools led by an NPQH graduate from the point of entering Special Measures came out within 3 terms during 2006 and 2010 compared to only 22 per cent of non-NPQH led schools.
- 42 per cent of schools engaged in the Middle Leadership Development Pilot since 2009 had not previously had any member of staff on Leading from the Middle, which suggests that the cluster-based model is successfully increasing the reach of the College.
- 80 per cent of participants feel that training provided by a network of local schools offers additional value compared with traditionally delivered training programmes.
- There are currently 108 participants on the Tomorrow’s Heads programme, 39 of whom have either gained a promotion or been accepted on to NPQH since starting the programme.
- During the financial year 2010/11 over 2,500 participants took part in the College’s School Business Management provision bringing the total number of participants who have accessed at least one of the SBM programmes to over 16,000.
- It is estimated that between 2002-2009, National College-qualified school business managers generated an additional £306 million through procurement efficiencies, increased income and savings in head teacher time. The return on investment increased markedly with the level of qualification and when school business managers operated across clusters of schools.
- A programme for directors of children’s services (DCSs) was introduced in November 2009. By June 2011, two-thirds of all DCSs (100 out of 153) had participated or were participating on the programme.
- By May 2011, over 2,200 children’s centre leaders had graduated from the National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL).
- 99 per cent of NPQICL participants provided evidence that their leadership has had a positive impact on children and families.
- 88 per cent of children’s centre leaders believed that the College has had a positive impact on the lives of children and young people.
