Chairs of governors leadership development

The National College, in collaboration with partner organisations, is currently developing a range of leadership development resources for chairs of governors. These resources will provide participants with the essential skills and competencies that will enable them to operate effectively as school leaders.

There will be two main components to this offer: a collection of resources available to all chairs of governors who are College members and a leadership development module.

Leading governors: resources

We are currently drawing together a collection of resources within a central, easy to use, location. They will be available to all governors who are members of the National College, and will help you to develop your practical skills and knowledge. The resources will be available from April 2012 and will include:

  • ‘How to…’ guides as part of a central set of resources
  • signposts to and resources from supporting organisations and bodies
  • access to Good Practice for Leaders and members' library resources
  • online discussions, networking and hotseats
  • the helpful ‘Ask your peers’ and ‘Ask the College’ services

Leading governors: leadership development module

We are also developing a study module, which will help you to develop as a school leader.

The Leading governors: leadership development module will be available from April 2012 and will contain the following features.

  • A leadership diagnostic to provide support and guidance on areas for development.
  • Three units of study focusing on areas such as the role of the chair as a leader, leading and developing teams, and leading change and continuous improvement. Each unit will have an accompanying face-to-face session and contain varied resources.
