Schools Financial Value Standard: Implications for governors and school business managers

This workshop expands on the Department for Education’s guidance notes for the Schools Financial Value Standard (SFVS). It will identify what might constitute appropriate evidence for each of the standards, and provide guidance on areas that may be problematic – with a particular focus on value-for-money.

The Department for Education guidance notes state that governing bodies should formally discuss the standards annually with the headteacher and senior staff.

The aims of the workshop are to:

  • provide guidance on the requirements of the SFVS
  • outline the respective roles and responsibilities of the governors and the school’s senior leadership team with regard to the financial management of the school
  • provide opportunities for governors and school business managers to discuss practice within their own schools
  • encourage sharing practice across schools
  • promote a value for money in schools

Who can apply?

The workshop is targeted largely at governors and school business managers working in schools that need help and support to respond to the SFVS and meet its requirements.

Ideally the governor representative will have a significant responsibility in this area eg the chair of governors or the chair of the finance committee.
