Member course: Stepping up to leadership

This short course will allow you to work collaboratively and independently to research current and future leadership role opportunities and to consider the type of leader you wish to be.

You will examine job application practicalities including criteria, your own skills and that all important interview.

It will also allow you to meet others online who are seeking their first leadership role or who want to step up to the next level and to build a support network that could continue beyond the course.

Who can apply?

This course is for members who are about to apply for their first leadership role or need to step up to the next level and are not on a National College programme. If you’re not a College member find out how to become one.

What's involved?

This course will look at how you can take the next steps in your leadership career and choose the professional development that is right for you. It includes practical tips on applications and interviews.

You will:

• research leadership opportunities available now, and those likely to be in the future, and have the opportunity to consider what type of leader you wish to be
• examine job specifications and how to respond effectively to them, addressing the essential criteria and making the most of the experience and skills that you have to offer
• raise your awareness of a range of interview tasks and consider how best to prepare yourself for them
• observe other people being interviewed, reflect on your own interview strengths and challenges, and examine how you might address these – then have the opportunity to practice interview questions and receive feedback
• work alongside other peers, supporting others’ learning and co-constructing knowledge

Date and duration

This is a one-week course starting on 23 April. You will need to be able to make a commitment to around 20 hours of learning. There will be specific dates and times for online meetings with your group, which will be confirmed by the course facilitator.

These online short courses are open to all members of the National College. They do not form part of the College’s online courses for accredited programmes, such as the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and the Middle Leadership Development Programme (MLDP).
