Becoming an academy

Academies are independent, non-fee paying schools funded by and accountable to the government. They have freedom from local authority control, the ability to set their own pay and conditions for staff, freedom from the National Curriculum and the ability to change the lengths of terms and school days. Some schools have used these freedoms to develop all-through schools for pupils of all ages. Others have joined chains of education providers with a shared ethos and approach to education. A further group - free schools - are being set up and run by interested parties such as parents and teachers.

The aims of the academy programme are to:

  • give all schools greater independence
  • improve schools often in disadvantaged areas
  • replace schools that have failed Ofsted inspections
  • allow schools presently in the fee-paying sector to open their doors to all pupils without charge

Converting to an academy

The Academies Act, passed in July 2010, made it possible for any school – primary, secondary or special – to become an academy.

As at November 2010, all outstanding schools and all schools that are ranked as ‘good’ with outstanding features by Ofsted are automatically eligible to apply for academy status. All other schools – primary or secondary – that would like to consider becoming an academy are also eligible, providing they work in partnership with a high-performing school that will help drive improvement. Special schools will be able to apply to for academy status from January 2011.

The Department for Education has produced a series of short videos featuring academy leaders and governors sharing their thoughts on the benefit of converting and advice on the process.
