In 2003, when Mark Grundy took up the post of executive head at George Salter in West Bromwich, only 15 per cent of pupils at the school gained five A*-C grades at GCSE – compared with 56 per cent in 2005 and 96 per cent in 2010.

He helped turn around a struggling school while managing his own college and was awarded a knighthood in 2006 for his work at George Salter, as well as his work in ICT.

Since 2006 Sir Mark Grundy has held the dual role of executive principal of Shireland Collegiate Academy and George Salter Collegiate Academy and the schools have continued to improve. He says he still thinks he has his greatest effect in shaping what to do in classrooms.
