Certificate of School Business Management

Certificate of School Business Management

The Certificate of School Business Management (CSBM) provides school business managers (SBMs) with the expertise required to perform the role to the best of their ability, and ultimately improve school effectiveness.

It is a world-leading programme that supports school leadership and management by developing a range of different learning techniques.

Key facts

  • The programme focuses on the role of the SBM and covers facilities management, risk management, financial management, office systems management, ICT management, human resource management and sustainable development.
  • CSBM has a broad equivalence to national qualifications framework (NQF) level 4; ie the first year of a first degree and is externally accredited by the Institute of Administrative Management (IAM).
  • CSBM is now accessible to people with alternative professional backgrounds such as industry and other public sector organisations.

Duration

8-12 months, depending on your personal circumstances and learning style.

Delivery method

CSBM includes an online induction, three facilitator-led face-to-face sessions, collaborative learning, reflective debate, online tools and self-directed study.

Who can apply?

Existing or aspirant school business managers undertaking the role or parts of the role at senior administrative or management level.

Next application round

The application round for CSBM Cohort 16 for internal applications is open until Friday 10 September 2010.

The application round for aspiring applications has now closed.

Financial contribution notice

The National College is committed to ensuring that prospective participants on programmes are always provided with advance notice of any planned changes associated with costs. This notice advises prospective participants that from 23 April 2011 that for all CSBM and DSBM cohorts commencing from that date a financial contribution will be required. We are introducing this following a reduction in funding but also to allow more participants to complete the programme.

In the case of Aspiring SBM participants this contribution will be required by the individual. For school based applicants we expect the contribution to be paid through their school. Whilst the contribution level is yet to be fully confirmed, we expect it to be in the region of £200-£300, a small percentage of the total cost. Small schools will remain exempt from this fee in line with college protocol.

This update simply serves as early warning of our plans. Further information will be made available when the relevant application rounds open.

We will also be reviewing contribution arrangements for our higher level programmes, ADSBM and SBD (School Business Director). Further guidance will be provided in due course along with the necessary notice.
