Accelerated Leadership Development Programme

DCS Accelerated Leadership Programme

The Accelerated Leadership Development Programme will provide a personalised, accelerated route to the position of director of children's services (DCS), for those who might be three or four years away from the role.

This new programme will equip talented individuals with the skills and knowledge to become highly effective, inspirational leaders. It is still being developed and it is our current thinking that it will prepare people for the Aspirant DCS Leadership Programme. Created under the National College’s new children’s services remit, the Accelerated Leadership Development Programme will appeal to ambitious people working in children’s services and the wider children’s workforce.

Key facts

  • The Accelerated Leadership Development Programme is being designed by the College and the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) and the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC).
  • It will offer sustainable succession planning by ensuring a future national pool of influential and successful DCSs who will be outstanding examples of the role.
  • The College proposes to recruit 20 participants to the programme each year.

Delivery method

The programme is currently being designed but is likely to include coaching, placements, work-based assignments, group learning and online materials.

Who can apply?

People who hold middle leadership positions in the children’s workforce who have demonstrated exceptional potential, although the eligibility criteria will be fully defined through the design process.

Next application round

The programme is expected to be launched in 2011, with applications expected from late 2010.
