Aspirant DCS Programme

The Aspirant DCS Programme is a highly personalised programme for individuals aiming for promotion to the role of director of children's services (DCS).
The programme forms part of the National College's extended remit which now includes children's services. Underpinned by the National Professional Framework for Leading and Managing Children’s Services in England, it is aimed at experienced motivated people whose ambition is to become a DCS. The programme is expected to generate a continuing supply of talented individuals, drawn from across the children and young people's workforce, who are ready to make the step up to the DCS role and to become truly inspirational and highly effective leaders.
Key facts
- The programme has been designed by the National College, the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) and the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC).
- Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the DCS role, its day-to-day realities and the statutory framework which shapes it.
- The programme is open to leaders and managers working in all parts of the children’s workforce.
Duration
Up to two years, depending on individuals’ requirements.
Delivery method
The programme is currently being designed but is likely to feature an initial assessment to determine individuals’ learning needs, with delivery through a range of methods including self-directed learning, residential activities, placements and online materials.
Who can apply?
Senior children’s services leaders and managers in the children’s services workforce at assistant director or equivalent level who are between six months and two years of their first DCS application. More detailed criteria will be available as part of the application process.
Next application round
The first applications will be invited in the spring of 2010.
