Benefits of the DCS Leadership Programme

The DCS Leadership Programme aims to achieve:

  • excellence in leadership, reflecting an understanding of the behaviours and attitudes of highly effective leaders – specifically directors of children's services (DCSs) – and how those behaviours and attitudes are best adjusted to their context
  • enhanced self-awareness amongst participants of their current leadership capabilities and potential
  • enhanced ability and confidence (building from enhanced self-awareness) to lead effectively across the broad remit of the DCS role
  • greater visibility of different strategic and operational approaches across local authorities and thus a stronger evidence base regarding best practice and improved knowledge sharing regarding emerging or innovative service delivery models and approaches
  • strengthened ability to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, organisations and partnerships that DCSs lead, and increased knowledge and ability to lead system wide performance improvement
  • recognition of how DCSs can continue to build on strengths and focus on areas for development through ongoing professional development and an enhanced peer network/suite of learning tools
