Who is EAP for?

Equal Access to Promotion is a leadership development programme for black and minority ethnic (BME) teachers who are aspiring to more senior roles and responsibilities.

In order to apply for EAP, you should be based in a maintained school and have at least four years' and less than 12 years' teaching experience since gaining qualified teacher status (QTS). You must also have commitment from your school for you to go on the programme.

If you are interested in EAP but do not meet some of the requirements listed above, please look at the following professional development opportunities:

Before you apply

Before you apply for EAP, you should consider the information and questions below.

EAP is a mix of blended learning, which includes a leadership development reflection activity to be concluded before the residential element of the programme. Participants are asked to prepare a short presentation reflecting on their learning from this activity. Phase three requires a more in-depth leadership study to be completed.

  • Do you have the commitment to complete such an activity, which is a core component of the EAP programme? The National College and NUT may request details for a school based contact.

EAP acknowledges that barriers to promotion exist in individual schools and the wider system, but focuses on individual strategies and tools to overcome such barriers.

  • CPD time is a precious resource in school – are you sure that EAP fits in with your professional development goals?

Research suggests that BME teachers welcome opportunities to explore and learn with their BME peers, and enjoy a programme facilitated by experienced BME facilitators and tutors.

  • Would you value the opportunity to explore leadership challenges and opportunities in a programme designed specifically for BME teachers?
