National Standards for Headteachers

The National Standards for Headteachers provide a framework for the role of headteacher. Set out in six, interdependent areas, the standards identify the knowledge requirements and professional qualities headteachers bring to the role.

There are a number of different ways the standards can be used, including to assist in the recruitment of a new headteacher, as part of the performance management process, and as a professional development tool. They are also used in the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) application process and assessment framework.

The standards were revised in 2004 to reflect the changing role of the headteachers as well as factors such as information and communications technology (ICT) and collaboration with others in the community. They are now set out in the following areas:

  • shaping the future
  • leading learning and teaching
  • developing self and working with others
  • managing the organisation
  • securing accountability
  • strengthening community
