Strategic Leadership of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Strategic Leadership of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an online unit created in partnership with the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). Participants on Leadership Pathways can complete it as one of their online units, but it is also available for those who are interested in the leadership of professional development to complete separately.

It is also a core unit for the TDA's local authority-taught programme and Master's level programme as part of the national training and development programme for CPD leadership. It is valuable to anyone who has strategic responsibility for CPD in their school.

Details

The unit takes 7–10 hours to complete and introduces participants to the key areas of knowledge and current research in CPD leadership. Using the latest research alongside examples and case studies, it guides participants through an examination of some of the central issues facing CPD leaders, including:

  • legislation, national initiatives, key definitions and perspectives on the strategic leadership of CPD
  • creating a learning culture that embraces all members of the school's workforce
  • models of the distributed leadership of CPD
  • what makes CPD effective, with a particular focus on collaborative approaches including coaching and personalised CPD
  • connecting CPD, performance management and review, and professional and occupational standards
  • techniques for evaluating the impact of CPD
  • mechanisms for sharing and embedding new professional knowledge
