This theme focuses on the importance of closing attainment gaps for specific groups of pupils such the most disadvantaged, those who have English as an additional language, those with special educational needs, and looked after children. This emphasis will also highlight the moral purpose of school leadership: namely to make a positive difference to pupils’ lives and learning. It will include consideration of the relationship between poverty and learning, and will explore practical strategies and actions that leaders can take to close gaps.
